Members of the Young Communist League mobilised for the annual commemoration of the Burston school strike.
The dispute lasted from 1914 to 1939 and was the longest strike in British labour history. It began when teachers Kitty Higdon and her husband, Tom Higdon, were sacked. A national speaking and organising tour of Scotland kicked off Saturday, in Glasgow. Following a gathering at the CP offices on 72 Waterloo Street, comrades and party supporters moved off to begin street campaigning in the busy and sunny Glasgow city centre.
Scottish communists have a regular street presence in the city centre where they conduct campaigning, meet supporters new and old, and try to answer questions and deal with problems raised by the public.
Today's activity also saw the launch of a national organising and speaking tour. This tour will take Communist Party national organiser, Andy Goodall and YCL General Secretary Joanne Stevenson,to Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen and Dumfries where they will meet local party members and branches as well as hold meetings and street campaigning.
